Plural of ɔbrafo, glossed by Christaller (1881) as 'executioner, hangman'. A.A. Anti (The Ancient Asante King) describes the abrafo as young-men executioners of the old Asante court; in present-day ceremonies they are court functionaries.
The abrafo held a formal role in the old Asante court.
