adinkra

Twi/Akan · Akan (Asante), Ashanti Region (Ntonso and Kumasi area) · Craft

Cotton cloth printed with carved calabash stamps using a dye called adinkra aduro (British Museum, whose example was collected at the Asante court in 1817). Cooper Hewitt links the cloth to Asante funerals and mourning, and states that adinkra means 'goodbye' in Twi.

Mourners wore adinkra cloth to the funeral.
