Agbekor

Ewe · Anlo Ewe (also Fon) / Volta Region · Music/Dance

Agbekor is an Ewe dance-drumming genre that Hill describes as originally a ritual war dance called Atamga ('great oaths'), which after the end of warfare evolved into a narrative dance depicting past acts of bravery and the blessings of peace. Gbolonyo (2005) lists atamga among the blema (pre-exodus) music types of the Anlo Ewe. It is now performed largely for cultural presentations.

Agbekor is often performed at cultural festivals.
