Ajami

Hausa · Hausa / Northern Ghana & market communities · Craft

The writing of Hausa and other African languages in modified Arabic script, predating and long coexisting with roman orthography. Ajami manuscripts preserve poetry, chronicles, legal texts and correspondence across West Africa. The tradition is significant for archives of pre-colonial African writing.

Ajami manuscripts in Ghanaian zongos hold poetry and legal opinion in Hausa.
