Field (1940) records Akumadzei as a section that later joined Alata and Sempe, the three together becoming known as English Accra or James Town. She notes that the Akumadzei elder sat with the Alata and Sempe mantsɛmɛi in James Town oath cases, and that the three sections each took a third of the proceeds of James Town land sales.
Akumadzei is one of the sections that make up James Town.
