Zimmermann (1858) glosses akutso as 'tribe; quarter of a town', with akutsobii for its members and akutsonukpa for the elder of a quarter. Parker (2000, as cited by Okoye 2019) uses akutsei (plural) for the quarters of Accra, such as Sempe, Akanmaji and Alata, and refers to seven recognised akutsei.
Each akutso of old Accra kept its own traditions.
