A Hausa double-reed wind instrument (shawm). Robinson's dictionary describes the algaita as 'a wind instrument blown in a somewhat similar way to a bagpipe'; the Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogues a Hausa algaita (early 20th c.) as a double-reed aerophone of wood, leather, metal and fabric.
The algaita was played among the instruments of the emir's ensemble.
