A river, lagoon and wetland complex of the Nzema coast, now known as the Greater Amanzule Wetland. It is a mosaic of peat, swamp and mangrove forest, floodplain, streams, a freshwater lake and lagoons. Local tradition regards Amanzule as a male deity, and customary rules include taboo days on which fishing is forbidden. Traditions differ on the origin of the name; one reading takes it from zule, 'water'.
Fishing on the Amanzule is traditionally forbidden on certain taboo days.
