Ame is the general Ewe word for 'person' or 'human being'. Westermann (1905) gives amea as 'the person/human' and the plural ameawo as 'the people', and the word forms the base of many compounds such as amedzro (stranger), amegã (elder) and amenuveve (compassion).
The word ame appears in many Ewe compounds.
