Amegã

Ewe · Ewe (general) · Kinship

Amegã (lit. 'big person') is an Ewe word that Westermann (1905) glosses in several senses: (1) an old man; (2) a respected, wealthy or influential man, including the magistrates of a town (amegãwo); (3) 'lord' or 'sir', also used as a form of address; and (4) god or deity. He also records 'yi amegãwo' ('to go to the elders') as a euphemism for dying.

Elders may be addressed as amegã.
