One of the historic quarters of Ga Mashie (old Accra) and, in tradition, an early Ga group. Reindorf (1895) records that when the Asere asked for ruling power, King Ayi Kushi retired into the sea. Field (1940) records a tradition calling Asere 'the father of the Ga mantse', whose stool priest annually renews the Ga Mantsɛ's hewale (power).
