A coastal town and the capital of Nzema East Municipality. It is the site of Fort St Anthony, built by the Portuguese in 1515 as their second Gold Coast fort after Elmina. The fort later passed to the Dutch and, in 1872, to Britain. Axim holds a major Kundum festival.
