Aziza

Ewe · Ewe / Fon (Gbe-speaking peoples), Ghana, Togo, Benin · Spiritual

Bush- or forest-dwelling 'little people' in Ewe and Fon belief. Westermann (1905) glosses aziza as synonymous with adee/akplakpui and gbetɔ 'bush-dweller', and records the belief that akplakpoe is 'a short person in the bush' who builds fine houses in the forest; he also lists a one-armed, one-legged deity under this name. In Dahomean (Fon) tradition the aziza are described as beneficent forest beings who give magic to hunters.

In Ewe lore, aziza are small beings said to live in the bush.
