Bori

Hausa · Hausa / Northern Ghana & market communities · Spiritual

A possession cult of Hausa-speaking communities in which practitioners, predominantly women, host spirits known as iskoki through drumming and dance. Each spirit has its own musical call, dress and manner, and sessions serve diagnostic and healing purposes. Bori persisted alongside Islam and travelled south with Hausa migration.

Each iskoki has its own drum call, and the possessed dancer takes on its manner.
