Dambe

Hausa · Hausa / Northern Ghana & market communities · People

A traditional Hausa boxing form, historically practised by the butchers' guild and performed at harvest and market festivals. One hand is bound in cord as the striking fist while the other is held open as a guard, and contests are accompanied by drumming and praise-chanting. It travelled south with Hausa trading communities into Ghanaian zongos.

Dambe bouts in the zongo are opened by the drummers' praise of each fighter's lineage.
