Do

Fante · Fante / Cape Coast, Central Region, Ghana (also Baule and Lagoons peoples, Côte d’Ivoire) · Ceremony

A masking tradition of Mande origin whose horizontal composite masks are found among the Baule and other western Akan and Lagoons peoples. Visonà et al. record Do masks belonging to a Fante asafo (military) company in Cape Coast, an exception among the Fante, who for the most part do not mask. At least some Do masks were used to protect against sorcery and witchcraft.

The Do maskers of a Cape Coast asafo company were photographed in 1979.
