Ewe noun for a town or settlement and, by extension, its community. Westermann (1905) glosses du as (1) settlement, town and (2) a political union of several related neighbouring settlements. Chapman (1944) uses duawo for the mass of ordinary adult citizens of the Anlo state.
Each du had its own chief, the dufia.
