Two senses are recorded. Westermann (1905) glosses dzoto (dzo 'magic' + -tɔ 'owner') as magician or sorcerer, one who makes charms and medicines. The Encyclopedia of World Cultures entry on Ewe and Fon religion uses 'djoto' for the reincarnation soul that returns in the next child born to the lineage.
The dzoto prepared protective charms.
