Gabada

Ewe · Mainland (northern) Ewe, e.g. Abutia / Volta Region, Ghana · Music/Dance

A genre of Ewe drumming, song and dance. In his recordings from Abutia Kloe, the anthropologist Michel Verdon classes Gabada as funeral music, performed in the commemorative wake-keeping before a funeral, with men drumming, a mixed choir of men and women, and dancers of both sexes. Verdon notes elaborate, varied songs and that the bell is not the leading instrument.

Gabada was played during the wake-keeping that preceded the funeral.
