Variant spelling of gankogui, the Ewe double iron bell. Ladzekpo describes it as a hand-forged instrument: a larger, low-pitched bell with a smaller, high-pitched one fixed to it, popularly called gakpevi ('the forged iron carrying a child'). The bell provides the steady timeline around which most Anlo-Ewe ensemble music is organised. The player sits holding it on the thigh and strikes it with a stick.
The gakogui pattern keeps the time for the whole ensemble.
