In Gonja chieftaincy, a 'gate' is a divisional ruling house whose chief is eligible to become Yagbonwura. Five divisional gates are now recognised (Wasipe, Kpembe, Bole, Tuluwe and Kusawgu), and the paramountcy rotates among them in a customary order. Within each division, the divisional skin also rotates among its own royal families, likewise called gates.
When a Yagbonwura dies, the next occupant of the skin is drawn from the gate whose turn it is.
