Gbuipe, now Buipe, is a town near the Black Volta and the capital of Central Gonja District. It has been a political and religious centre of Gonja since at least the seventeenth century: the Arabic Kitab Ghanja was written there, and tradition places the oldest Gonja mosque there and Ndewura Jakpa's tomb at Old Buipe.
The eighteenth-century Arabic chronicle of Gonja was written at Gbuipe.
