Gonja Smock

Gonja · Gonja / Savannah Region · Textile

The narrow-strip woven smock of the Gonja and neighbouring northern peoples, worn loose over trousers and flaring when the wearer turns. Strips are woven on the horizontal treadle loom and stitched together, with chiefly versions carrying more strips and embroidered necklines. It is worn at Damba, Jintigi and state durbars.

A Gonja smock is judged by the number of strips and the fineness of the neck embroidery.
