A one-stringed bowed lute with a calabash body and lizard-skin belly, played by hereditary musicians attached to chiefly courts. The gonje accompanies praise singing and is closely associated with the Gondze musicians of Dagbon. Its single string is stopped without a fingerboard.
The gonje player bows a sustained line beneath the praise singer's recitation.
