Jakpa traditions

Gonja · Gonja / Savannah Region · History

The body of oral and written narrative about Ndewura Jakpa's conquests and his sharing of lands among his sons, which underpins the claims of the Gonja divisional chiefdoms. The earliest recorded version is in the Arabic Kitab Ghanja (mid-eighteenth century); later oral and colonial-era versions differ, for example on where Jakpa came from.

Different Jakpa traditions disagree on where the founder came from and how he died.
