Kanyase is one of the three royal gates of the Kpembe Traditional Area, with Lepo and Singbung; the Kpembewura skin rotates among them. According to a 2004 account by the Kpembewura, Kanyase was founded by one of twin brothers from Lepo, and its later claim to a turn on the Kpembe skin led to war. Its head bears the title Kanyasewura.
The late Kpembewura came from the Kanyase gate, so the next turn passed to another gate.
