Kramo

Gonja · Gonja / Savannah Region · Religion / Islam

In the classic analysis of Gonja society, the karamo (kramo) were the Muslim estate, mainly merchants and clerics of varied origins. They stood alongside the ruling estate (gbanya) and the commoners (nyamase), closely associated with but separate from the rulers.

In precolonial Gonja the Kramo supplied clerics and traders to the courts of the divisional chiefs.
