Kunde

Ewe · Ewe / Ghana and Togo (Gorovodu/Brekete); also Akan belt · Spiritual

Kunde is the name associated with the 'northern' medicine-vodu order known as Gorovodu or Brekete among Ewe-speakers. Locke, reviewing Friedson's Remains of Ritual, describes its subject as 'Lahare Kunde, a.k.a. Brekete, a gorovodu religious practice of the Ewe-speaking people of Ghana and Togo'. Medushevsky (2024) treats 'gorovodu (kunde)' as a single cult that incorporated spirits from northern regions in response to colonial-era hardships, and Venkatachalam indexes Kunde both as an anti-witchcraft cult in the Akan belt and as a shorthand for Gorovodu.

Kunde shrines in coastal Ghana are associated with the Brekete drumming tradition.
