Larabanga Mosque

Gonja · Gonja / Savannah Region · Architecture

A Sudanese-style mud-and-stick mosque at Larabanga in the Savannah Region, built of mud over a timber frame with projecting torons and conical buttressed towers. It is among the oldest surviving mosques in Ghana and requires periodic replastering by the community. It stands beside the Mystic Stone of local tradition.

The Larabanga mosque's projecting timbers serve as scaffolding when the mud is renewed.
