Legba is a vodu associated with entrances, communication between humans and gods, and fertility, commonly represented by a guardian figure of moulded earth. Westermann glosses legba as a clay idol figure, made by coating a driven stake with clay and set up at a house, and Rosenthal notes that earthen Legbas are common and that Legba statues serve as guardian deities. Visonà et al. identify Legba as the Fon counterpart of the Yoruba Eshu, found among Aja peoples including the Ewe.
A small earthen legba stood beside the compound entrance.
