In Fon religion Lisa is the male member of the creator pair Mawu-Lisa: the Encyclopedia of African Religion describes Lisa as the male principle linked to the sun, day, heat, work, power and war, and Mawu as the female principle linked to the moon. Rosenthal notes that among the Fon, Mawu and Lisa are presented as a couple, twins, or a single androgynous divinity. Among Ewe-speakers Westermann records Selisa as a particular representation of the god Se, connecting lisa with the chameleon that is sacred to Se.
