Mantsɛ (plural mantsɛmɛi) is the Ga title for a chief or king; Akwetteh (2022) glosses mantsɛ as 'king'. Robertson (Encyclopedia of World Cultures) records that each quarter of Accra has a mantse, whose relative ranking depends on the antiquity of the position, the holder's age and personality, and the authority delegated by government, and that the mantsemei rose as war chiefs in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The Ga Mantse is mentioned in many accounts of the Homowo festival.
