Ngbanyito

Gonja · Gonja / Savannah Region · Language

Ngbanyito is the Gonja people's own name for their language, a North Guang language of the Kwa branch of Niger-Congo spoken in northern Ghana. The GILLBT/SIL Gonja dictionary records it as ŋgbanyɛto, 'Gonja language', from the same root as ŋgbanyɛ, 'Gonja people'. Older sources report that the ruling estate and the Muslims spoke Gbanyito, while commoners also spoke various Gur or Guang languages.

Ngbanyito is a North Guang language, and its speakers call themselves Ngbanya.
