notsie

Ewe · Ewe / Notsé, Plateaux Region, Togo · Place

Notsie (Notsé) is a town in present-day Togo regarded in Ewe oral tradition as the ancestral homeland from which Ewe groups dispersed. The Encyclopedia of African Religion states that the Ewe settled around 1500 at Notsie, and Ewe migration narratives link the dispersal to the harsh rule of King Agokoli. Greene's study opens with the 'Notsie narratives' and treats them as contested histories of memory and meaning.

Many Ewe states trace their founding to the exodus from Notsie.
