Nunya means knowledge or wisdom. Westermann has deze nunya, 'to become wise, clever, sensible', and kpla nunya, 'to acquire knowledge, to learn', and lists nunya among synonyms for understanding and cleverness (adanu, tamebubu, gomesese). It is the key word of the proverb 'Nunya adidoe, asi metunee o' (knowledge is like a baobab tree).
Elders are respected as holders of nunya.
