Nyonmo

Ga · Ga, Greater Accra · Spiritual

Nyɔŋmɔ is the Ga name for the Supreme Being; Adjei (2006) glosses it as 'the Supreme Being' and the honorific Ataa-Naa Nyɔŋmɔ as 'grandfather-grandmother God'. Adjei records that the same word is used for rain, and that some Ga Christians have introduced 'nugbo' for rain in order to separate God from the natural phenomenon; he argues that Nyɔŋmɔ was well established in Ga religious life before Christianity. Compounds listed by Adjei include Nyɔŋmɔ shimɔ (thunder) and Nyɔŋmɔ kane (moonlight).

Prayers in Ga tradition may address Nyɔŋmɔ as Ataa Naa Nyɔŋmɔ.
