Nzema society is organised in matrilineal clans. Sources on both Ghanaian and Ivorian Nzema refer to seven clans, among them Nvavile and Mafole. Valsecchi (2001) argues that 'Nzema' has covered several overlapping social, political and territorial identities rather than one bounded group.
