Otsaame

Ga · Ga, Greater Accra · Royal Title

Otsaame (otsiame) is the Ga term for a spokesman or 'mouthpiece'. Field (1940) states that 'the otʃame is the mouthpiece of any group and is chosen for his fluency, accuracy, and tact', and notes that in Accra the Gbese maŋtsɛ serves as the otʃame of the other chiefs. The Encyclopedia of African Religion describes the Otsame as the linguist who speaks for the Ga Mantse and carries a decorated staff.

At durbars the otsaame speaks on behalf of the chief.
