Penkye Otu is the principal god of the Effutu of Winneba, believed to have protected the people during their migration to Winneba; the Aboakyer (deer/bushbuck-hunting) festival is held in his honour. According to tradition the god first demanded a live leopard each year before an alternative offering was accepted. Some Winneba informants held that Sekum Apa was an older name of Penkye Otu, though others identified Sekum Apa as a separate Etsi god.
The Aboakyer hunt culminates in offerings at the shrine of Penkye Otu.
