Sakpare is the name of the long-established Muslim clerical group of Gonja, from whom the official imams of the Gonja chiefdoms are drawn. A 1991 government committee of inquiry described them as descendants of Fatimarukpe, the spiritual companion of Ndewura Jakpa. Their hold on the imamship has recently been contested by Salafi reformists.
The imams of the Gonja chiefly courts are customarily drawn from the Sakpare.
