Shipi is a Ga military office within the asafo organisation. Field (1940) records that in Tema there were two shipi, one for each half of the town, each with four asafoatsɛmɛi (company captains) beneath him, and in Accra that each group had a shipi and several asafoatsɛmɛi. Field describes the positions as hereditary and notes duties such as being notified when an asafo member dies and, at Asere, calling a meeting of the elders.
The shipi is described as an officer of the asafo.
