Among the Gurensi (Frafra), tingana are earth-god shrines and the territories they define. Before colonial rule, Gurensi land was divided into tingana areas, some of which give towns their names. The singular, tinganɛ, is the shrine at which the tindaana sacrifices for the community.
Each tingana area has its own tindaana responsible for its rites.
