Tɔŋu (Tongu) denotes the lower basin of the Volta River east of Akuse down to the coast below Sogakope, and the Ewe-speaking people of that area, whose name Kpoglu glosses as 'those who live by the river', i.e. the riverines. Communities include Battor, Mepe, Mafi, Vume, Tefle and Sokpoe west of the river and Sogakope, Volo and Bakpa to the east. Their dialect is called Tongugbe; Kpoglu describes the community as organised into clans, subdivided into gates and extended families.
Mepe and Battor are among the Tongu communities on the Volta.
