Vihehedego

Ewe · Ewe / Volta Region, Ghana · Ceremony

Vihehedego is the Ewe naming or 'outdooring' rite for a newborn, reported as held on the morning of the eighth day after birth and conducted by a respected elder. Libation is poured as the name is pronounced, water is sprinkled on the child, and the child tastes water and alcohol, said to teach the difference between good and evil; names may follow clan conventions.

Relatives gathered at dawn for the vihehedego.
