The Dagbani Dictionary glosses wulana (plural wulannima) as 'the first elder in the Council, linguist (the spokesman to and for the chief)'. In Chernoff's 'A Drummer's Testament' (ch. II-5) the title is used for the most senior elder close to a chief.
The chief's words were conveyed to the visitors through the Wulana.
