Zabarima (Zabarma, Zarma) refers to Zarma horse traders and mercenaries from Niger who moved south from the 1860s. Under Alfa Hanno, Gazari and Babatu they raided the Grusi region for slaves, until French and British forces defeated them by 1897.
Upper East oral histories recall the Zabarima raids of the late nineteenth century.
